SUN PRAIRIE PUBLIC LIBRARY ANNOUNCES SUMMER READING PROGRAM
SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The Sun Prairie Public Library began registration for its annual summer reading
program on Monday, June 8. The summer reading program is for all ages! There is a program for
everyone from babies to adults, and the entire family can keep track of the books they read and get
prizes. Register in person or online at https://sunprairiepubliclibrary.beanstack.com/reader365.
The infant program acknowledges that early literacy is about much more than reading. Singing songs
and playing games are important too, and they count! Older toddlers through young teens can choose
to log their reading by either how much time they spend reading or how many books they read, with a
goal of 75 books or 12 hours of reading for the summer. Teens are required to read 15 hours to
complete the program. Adults complete the program by reading a total of 30 hours. All reading counts!
Prizes include Dane County Fair passes, Mallards baseball tickets, Asteria ice cream, Primal Cue mac and cheese, and more!
Reading during the summer is an excellent way to counter summer slide, which is when students lose
skills during out of school time. Reading about 20 minutes per day during the summer will help prevent
this skill loss. As noted by Karl Alexander and Doris Entwisle at Johns Hopkins University, students who
do not read during the summer are an average of 2 years behind their peers by the end of 5th grade.
The Sun Prairie Public Library also hosts many fun and engaging programs for all ages throughout the
summer. The Koo Koo Summer Kickoff starts the fun on Saturday, June 13, with showtimes at
11:00am and 2:00pm. Koo Koo is described as “the Beasties Boys meet Sesame Street” and billed as a
sassy, interactive dance party duo with bangers for all ages! Additional activities from 11:00-2:00
include games, crafts, and face painting by Antsy Pants Face Painting. If you get hungry, food trucks will
be on site with food available for purchase. Face painting is free for all thanks to the Friends of the SPPL
and Koo Koo Summer Kickoff is generously supported by the SPPL Foundation.
There are many programs all summer long – there’s something for everyone! From the Angela Puerta
Band to Zoozort Live Animal Program and everything in between. All library programs are free to attend.
